This throwback to the good old days of Disney live-action entertainment is an Antarctic adventure that is both beautifully crafted and skillfully executed. Inspired by an actual event, this engrossing family film was directed by Frank Marshall, who produced "Raiders of the Lost Arc," and directed "Arachnophobia," and stars Paul Walker ("The Fast and the Furious") as Gerry Shepherd, an outdoorsman guide for scientific expeditions in Antarctica. Walker is quite convincing as an expert survival guide and his bond with the dogs is so believable that it justifies his subsequent actions. Jason Biggs ("American Pie") provides some much-needed comic relief as his nerdy sidekick and Bruce Greenwood (President John F. Kennedy in "Thirteen Days") plays a rugged American geologist. There's even a love interest provided by Moon Bloodgood ("Win a Date with Tad Hamilton") who plays a airplane pilot. The first 30 minutes sets up the dangers of the Antarctic. Then a severe storm and a man in need of emergency medical attention forces Shepard to leave his sleigh dogs behind, thinking he’ll be coming right back for them.

During the harsh, Antarctic winter, the dogs struggle for survival alone in the intense frozen wilderness using their instincts to stay alive for more than 6 months. What will surprise you most is how completely involved in the drama you'll become, and the scenery is unbelievably gorgeous. The score by Mark Isham ("Miracle") beautifully complements the thrilling adventure, the incredible scenery, and the gripping story.
