In this computer animated adventure, Roddy a pampered pet mouse (voiced by Hugh Jackman) winds up "flushed away" into a sewer - an alternate version of London, teeming with mice, rats, frogs and slugs. Almost immediately, Roddy gets embroiled in the underworld misadventures of a red-headed tomboy rat named Rita (Kate Winslet) who captains her own sewer boat called the Jammy Dodger. On the boat a gas can serves as a cabin, a water tap for its helm and green tennis balls for side bumpers. Rita is locked in mortal combat with the villainous Toad (Ian McKellen), who hopes to rid his world of rodents yet employs two of them as his henchrats, the all-talk-little-action Spike (Andy Serkis) and a hulking albino rat named Whitey (Bill Nighy). A struggle over a ruby diamond devolves into a battle for a piece of cable that Toad needs to fulfill his dastardly plan to wipe out the cheese-eating underground rodents. When his henchrats fail to do the job, Toad calls on his cousin Le Frog (Jean Reno), a French mercenary who means business but only after eating a five-hour dinner. A wild river chase through the sewers is the film's highlight. There you'll see singing slugs that burst into song commenting on the action and who even join with Roddy in serenading Rita. "Flushed Away" comes from Aardman Features, the U.K.-based cartoon studio that last brought us "Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit" as well as the delightful "Chicken Run." This gloriously droll comic adventure is their best yet.
