Fantastic Mr. Fox

Fantastic Mr. Fox starring George Clooney: DVD Cover In this highly original animated version of the Roald Dahl best selling children's book, Mr Fox (voiced by George Clooney) has a pretty fantastic life as a newspaper columnist living in his underground den with his wife (Meryl Streep), their comic book-obsessed son Ash (Jason Schwartzman) and visiting nephew Kristofferson (Eric Anderson). After Fox convinces his wife to move aboveground to a tree, he becomes tempted to go back to his bird-stealing ways. And with his possum pal Kylie (Wally Wolodarsky), he goes on a spree that enrages the local farmers, led by the furious Bean (Michael Gambon), who vows revenge. But this puts the entire animal population in danger. Now Mr Fox must use all of his wits to save his family and friends from certain doom.

By focussing on the offbeat family and extended animal community, director Wes Anderson ("The Royal Tennenbaum's") shifts the story into his usual exploration of internal angst and interpersonal relationships told with wit and energy, some hysterical dialog, terrific characters and absolutely gorgeous animation. And he employs the  old-style stop-motion animation technique that is deliberately jerky and goofy which  brilliantly brings these charming characters to life.

The point of the story is the idea that a fox can't really be happy without a chicken in his teeth. Obviously, this idea resonates on a deeper level, but the film's really just a brilliantly animated lightweight comedy. And if its message might be a little simplistic, at least Fantastic Mr. Fox demonstrates astounding visual innovation. And it's a thoroughly engaging way to spend an hour an a half with your family and friends.
