Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas
Ron Howard who has previously made many excellent films has not quite been unable to bring this magical story to life despite the best efforts of Jim Carrey and a raft of beautiful sets and costumes, and fabulous make-up and special effects. Youngsters may find the story too scary for much of the running time and the uniformly unpleasant residents of Whoville will turn off many adults. The witty lines from the book pop up occasionally read in grand style by Anthony Hopkins; but the additions necessary to pad the film to feature-length don't make it the joyful experience we were all hoping for. The cast works hard playing the mean-spirited residents of Whoville. There's Jeffrey Tambor as the mayor, Christine Baranski as his snooty girlfriend, Bill Irwin and Molly Shannon as the parents of the only sympathetic character - Taylor Monson. She's the little angel who sees some good in the evil Grinch. Jim Carrey tries hard as always, and some say that this is his finest performance. But basically this is an overproduced charmless adaptation of a book that was so wonderful in print and animation.
