Ice Age: Continental Drift
In this fourth installment of this 3-D computer-animated adventure series, the ice shelf suddenly cracks in two, and mammoth Manny (voice of Ray Romano) finds himself adrift with sabre-tooth Diego (Denis Leary), sloth Sid (John Leguizamo) and Sid's toothless granny (Wanda Sykes). But as they attempt to get home, they're waylaid by a pirated iceberg and Captain Gutt (Peter Dinklage) with his scurvy crew. Meanwhile, Manny's wife Ellie (Queen Latifah) and their mildly rebellious daughter Peaches (Keke Palmer) are trying to outrun the shifting continental plates. But the film's real star Scrat (Chris Wedge) is on a hunt for the treasured acorn.

Fortunately, the filmmakers keep everything moving so briskly that we don't have time to focus on the gaping holes in the film's basic premise. The high-energy set-pieces are surprisingly thrilling and the songs are both silly and funny. There are also some surprisingly hilarious touches, including each character's encounter with a siren and the rather deranged conclusion to Scrat's search.

Captain Gutt (Peter Dinklage), the flamboyant baboon is such a crazed scene-stealer that he could easily sustain the next spin-off, but it's Wanda Sykes who gets all the best lines as Granny, the feisty Mr Magoo-like crone. And Jennifer Lopez is on hand as a white tiger to give Diego a bit of trouble Even so, the very best thing about this film is the Maggie-centered Simpson's short that precedes it.
