Zathura
Based on a book by Chris Van Allsburg (Polar Express, Jumanji), two squabbling brothers discover a board game with magical powers in their basement. Instead of unleashing jungle animals as the game in "Jumanji" did, this board game takes their beautiful Craftsman house and flies the whole thing off to the rings of Saturn. Each turn of the spinning house brings a new danger, from meteor showers and menacing robots to swarms of lizard-monsters, and soon the children realize they won't see solid ground again unless they keep playing. Avoiding computer effects where real ones suffice, the film directed by Jon Favreau (Elf) is a movie that even adults with no kids will enjoy. Much of its success is due to some wonderful performances, both from its child actors, particularly Jonah Bobo, as the hyperactive brother with a knack for pushing things a little too far, and Dax Shepard,("Punk'd") playing a spaceman who helps the kids.

But while you may think that "Zathura" is just a space version of "Jumanji," it's a far better movie due to its focus on the deepening relationship between the brothers. This sci-fi adventure is great entertainment for the entire family, although some younger children might be frightened by the scary-looking lizard-monsters.
